You Me At Six frontman Josh Franceschi has spoken to Rock Sound of the “honour and privilege” of his “shitty little band” playing such a prestigious slot at Reading And Leeds this year.
“It is very weird to be playing just before Limp Bizkit. We said to our management, ‘Do you reckon we’ll get asked to do Reading And Leeds?’ and they said we’d done it two years in a row, so probably not. I kept pestering them and they said they hadn’t even done the headliners yet. Then when Paramore got an offer I was like, ‘Come on!’ and the day after I got a call from our manager and he said ‘Guess where you’re playing…’ To think that when we go off Limp Bizkit go on… They ARE nu metal. They’re what every kid in the world was listening to back in 2002.”
Like the rest of us, Franceschi uses festival billings as a marker to see how far his band have come. Despite now being a truly global force, the fact he’s playing ahead of some of his heroes continues to weird him out. Playing above Motion City Soundtrack? Not that much of a big deal. Some other post-hardcore legends? Now that’s a different story…
“I can’t believe we’re playing above Thrice. The first ever show I went to was The Dillinger Escape Plan and Thrice at the Islington Academy, and I remember thinking Thrice were the best band in the world. To think my shitty little band is playing above a band who’ve been doing this for 10 years... It’s weird but it’s also an honour and a privilege.
“Every time we accomplish something in the UK we set ourselves a new goal, because if we have something to work for we work our arses off to get there. This year we headlined Brixton and I never ever thought we’d play the Main Stage at Reading and Leeds, it’s like playing to a million people. It blows my mind that we’re going to be part of that.”
